Moutere Hills – Moutere Nelson

Moutere Hills winery is situated amongst the picturesque hills near Nelson in the warm and sunny north of New Zealand’s South Island. It is a family owned boutique vineyard and winery.

The property, located 2kms from the historic Upper Moutere village, comprises of two vineyards; one on the north facing hill block and the other on the lower home block. The first vines were planted on the property in 1993 and the most recent in 2013.

The vineyards benefit from the moderating effect of the Tasman Bay to our north and are protected from severe weather by the surrounding Arthur and Richmond ranges.

The vines are on Moutere clay gravels, which give the wines a lovely fruit density, minerality and fine tannin. The nature of these soils also removes the necessity for irrigation. The Nelson area is one of New Zealand’s sunniest regions and clear skies allow for very cool nights, which results in an expressive flavour development in the fruit and a solid structure of fruit acid.

After a fire destroyed the original winery in 2006, a new winery was built in its place. The restaurant and cellar door were also rebuilt following the fire and upgraded again in 2018.
